Every breath they take: the science of watching whales being watched

THE larger of the two humpback whales - probably the mother - suddenly launches herself out of the water. Immediately, the juvenile meandering northwards beside her in the waters outside Sydney Harbour follows suit, the whack of their giant bodies and flippers creating two huge splashes.
